Former DuBois mayor accused of stealing snacks, drinks from Sheetz: Police

DUBOIS, Pa. (WJAC) — A former local mayor is facing theft charges. Former DuBois mayor Randy Schmidt resigned in August. Officials said he retired to spend time with family, but according to police, Schmidt is being charged with retail theft. According to a criminal complaint, Schmidt stole from the Sheetz on North Brady Street in DuBois. The complaint alleges that the thefts occurred on 17 different dates ranging from March to August.

Meyersdale, Central claim state baseball championships

UNIVERSITY PARK - Two local teams claimed state championships Thursday at Penn State University’s Medlar Field. Meyersdale defeated Clarion 2-0 in the PIAA Class A title game and Central triumphed over Holy Redeemer 8-3 in the Class AAA championship. For Meyersdale, winning pitcher Riley Christner struck out 12 batters for the Red Raiders, who finished the season 21-6. Meyersdale lost to Vincentian Academy in last year’s title game. Central capped off its season with the first ever state baseball championship for the school, as the Dragons jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning and held on for the win.

Windber man, Johnstown business owner killed in weekend plane crash in Forest County

State police say a Windber man was reportedly killed over the weekend in a plane crash in Forest County. According to a report from PSP Marienville, the body of 59-year-old John Burley was reportedly found Friday night in the area of Buzzard Swamp Road in Jenks Township. Investigators say troopers were notified of reports of a suspected plane crash and an investigation led to the discovery of the crash site, where Burley was found deceased.

Man sleeping in dumpster ends up in trash truck

MCKEES ROCK, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a man sleeping in a dumpster was tossed into the back of a garbage truck as the trash was being emptied, causing him to lose his prosthetic leg. WPXI-TV reports the incident occurred around 2 a.m. Thursday in McKees Rocks. The truck driver heard the man yelling and called 911. Officials say that while he was in the back of the truck the man realized his prosthetic lower leg was missing.

Man who took selfie after fatally shooting friend convicted

GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) -- A Pennsylvania man who authorities say shot a friend and then posed for a selfie with the dying teen has been convicted of a less serious charge. Maxwell Morton was convicted Thursday of third-degree murder in the shooting of 16-year-old Ryan Mangan in February 2015. The jury rejected prosecutors' arguments that Morton intentionally killed Mangan. Morton testified Thursday that the teens were playing with a handgun and he thought it was unloaded when he pointed at him and pulled the trigger.
