Nursing and Personal care homes reach "critical" point amid more closures

Johnstown, PA (WJAC) — Finding personal care for a loved one can be hard enough. That process became increasingly more difficult following the Covid-19 Pandemic. The Pennsylvania Assisted Living Association says more than 230 personal care homes have closed across the state since the pandemic began. M. Veil Griffith, an administrator with the Cambria County Area Agency on Aging says, "It boils down to a financial problem." The Atrium, a personal care home in Johnstown, is one of the most recent facilities to announce it's closing its doors.

Portage Borough working to repeal 'obscene materials' ordinances following federal lawsuit

According to the agenda for the Portage Borough council meeting from Monday, work is being done to repeal three ordinances named in a federal lawsuit filed by Bodies in Motion owner Gary Vaughn. The lawsuit, filed last December, names 11 defendants, including Portage Borough itself, its mayor, borough manager, five members of council, and three members of the police department. Vaughn said he argues the borough has some "unenforceable and unconstitutional ordinances"

Thousands of supporters await President Trump's arrival to Arnold Palmer Regional Airport

LATROBE, Pa. (WJAC) — Thousands of people awaited President Donald Trump’s arrival to a Westmoreland County airport Thursday. President Trump is scheduled to make remarks Thursday evening at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Latrobe. Attendees started taking their seats hours before the President’s arrival. Even with the hangar packed with people, there were still hundreds of supporters waiting just outside where they will be watching the President’s remarks on a screen.

30th Annual Bellefonte Cruise attracting hundreds of folks to town

BELLEFONTE – The 30th Annual Historic Bellefonte Cruise continued Saturday in Centre County. Hundreds of people crowded the streets downtown to see the historic cars and motorcycles. "I look for the older cars. I like Corvettes," resident Fred Zanghi said. From Corvettes to motorcycles, antiques and even kids' cars, the Bellefonte cruise has almost every car imaginable. "I think they're nice,. I want all of them," attendee Cheyenne Bookmiller said.

Johnstown Walk of Hope to raise money for local cancer patients

The Johnstown Walk of Hope will help ease the burden cancer patients in our region face by raising money to help cover the cost of life saving care they need. Mother gets 30 to 80 years for drowning of 2 sons in bathtub

PITTSBURGH -- A Pennsylvania woman who drowned her two youngest sons in their bathtub because she felt that would enable her to be a better mother to their older brother has been sentenced to 30 to 80 years in prison. An Allegheny County judge in March found 44-year-old Laurel Schlemmer guilty but mentally ill of third-degree murder after hearing three days of testimony and arguments. The judge called the sentence imposed Wednesday a de-facto life term given the defendant's age.

Owner says Three Mile Island plant to shut down in 2019

HARRISBURG -- The owner of Three Mile Island, site of the United States' worst commercial nuclear power accident, says it will shut down the plant in 2019 without a financial rescue from Pennsylvania. Exelon Corp. said Monday's announcement comes after five years of losses on the power plant and its recent failure in an auction to sell Three Mile Island's power into the regional grid. The Chicago-based energy company wants Pennsylvania to give nuclear power megawatts the kind of preferential treatment and premium payments that are given to renewable energies, such as wind and solar.
