Central PA organization prepares for 'Festival of Trees' event in Centre Co.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa (WJAC) — Trees were set up Wednesday at the Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology ahead of the Festival of Trees in State College. The festival runs from this Friday, Dec. 13, through Sunday Dec. 15, however, the trees will be lit on Thursday. There will also be food and entertainment available. The cost is $2 for adults and $1 for children. Proceeds will help support Centre County United Way partner agencies and CPI student organizations.

Ideal Market in downtown Johnstown closing its doors

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — The Ideal Market in downtown Johnstown will soon be closing its doors. According to a press release sent to 6 News Friday, the Ideal Market on Walnut Street near the War Memorial will close this summer. The release states that the Ideal Markets in Geistown, Seward, Vinco and Homer City will not be impacted. “The business climate in the downtown area has changed significantly in recent years,” explained owner Dave Mihalick.

Jennerstown Speedway hosting 2nd annual Motor Mountain Masters

JENNERSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — This weekend the Jennerstown Speedway Complex is hosting its second annual Motor Mountain Masters. The Motor Mountain Masters is a premier late model race and is one of the largest of its kind in the country. Teams from about 17 states are taking part. “So, what it does for Somerset County, it is definitely a huge boost in the tourism and the attractions,” said Speedway Complex General Manager Billy Hribar.

Johnstown man dies in rollover crash

JOHNSTOWN - State police in Ebensburg said Patrick Knapp of Johnstown died Monday morning in a crash in Cambria County. Knapp, 44, was pronounced dead at the scene by Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees. Police said Knapp's Chevrolet Colorado truck was traveling west on Route 56 in Dale Borough. His vehicle left the road near the Bedford Street exit ramp and rolled over several times around 11:04 a.m. Knapp was not wearing his seat belt, police said.

Punxsutawney man charged with rape and supplying alcohol to a minor in Clearfield County

Authorities say a Punxsutawney man has been charged after he allegedly raped a girl in Clearfield County early last month. According to a probable-cause affidavit, 22-year-old Hunter Vroman, of Park Avenue, reportedly supplied alcohol to a 15-year-old girl on June 1 at a residence along South 3rd Street in Clearfield Borough. Vroman is accused of then sexually assaulting the girl. After the incident, according to the affidavit, bruises were seen on the girl’s body.

Conemaugh River Dam open to public tours during "Dam Day"

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have organized a "Dam Day" at the Conemaugh River Dam for the first time in over 20 years on Saturday. Free outside tours were open to the public while those who pre-registered and passed a background check were able to see inside of the dam. “I’m very proud of the facilities," said Emily Potter, Resource Manager at Conemaugh Dam. Mother dies in Lake Powell saving 2-year-old son

Update: 8/25/16, 1:06 p.m.: Officials say the woman who died is from Lakewood, Colorado. Neither she nor the 2-year-old were wearing life jackets. The mother has been identified as Chelsea Russell. (KUTV) A woman at Lake Powell died Tuesday rescuing her 2-year-old son, who had fallen overboard into the lake. The 33-year-old woman was boating near Halls Crossing at the lake, according to a release from the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

Murder investigation launched after child's death in California, authorities say

LOS ANGELES (TND) — A homicide investigation is underway after a child was found dead in Palmdale, which is a California city, authorities announced Thursday. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said the child's father, 29-year-old Schaffer Grindstaff, was arrested in connection to the case. Charges include accessory to conceal a crime and child endangerment. In a news release, the sheriff's department said deputies from Palmdale Sheriff’s Station responded to a scene after dispatchers received a call Wednesday morning about a child who was not breathing.

Pirates pitching prospect Quinn Priester to make major league debut Monday

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pitching prospect Quinn Priester is to make his major league debut Monday night for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Pirates manager Derek Shelton said Saturday that the Pirates plan to call up Priester from Triple-A Indianapolis to face Cleveland. Priester was the Pirates’ first-round pick in the 2019 amateur draft. The 22-year-old right-hander is 7-3 with a 4.31 ERA in 18 starts for Indianapolis this season. “It’s a situation where he’s continuing to get better and deserves to get an opportunity at the major league level,” Shelton said.

The impact to multiple communities

WJAC — “The pharmacy has always been the lifeline of our communities." says Pharmacist, Jackie Martella, after local pharmacy chain “Mainline Pharmacy” announced it’s closing most of its stores. She and others say they are feeling the impacts. "It’s heartbreaking to see pharmacies close down in our communities. With the recent closure of the mainline chain, it’s sad.” Martella says. She says pharmacies are essential to the healthcare system, and says local based businesses like Mainline Pharmacy and Martella's Pharmacy have an advantage to learning about their customers on a personal level.
